Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus, Ohio
Following the demolition of outdated offices on the fourth floor and the inpatient behavioral health unit on the fifth floor, this backfill project converts two floors of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s T-Building into 21,000 SF of office and a new Fetal Medicine Clinic.
Creative solutions maximize usable square footage within the irregular footprint, which is both curved and dotted with columns. Offices were designed to a module that allowed for a range of configurations from private offices to group workrooms of 10 or more. Distributing the offices around the core allowed for maximum light while maintaining circulation around the centralized support spaces. On the fourth floor, this included a large conference room for virtual seminars, grand rounds, and collaboration with outside institutions.
The fifth floor not only included offices but an ECMO training room and new Fetal Medicine Clinic. Life safety egress requirements and separation between the clinic and administrative offices were challenges that were resolved through a strong understanding of door hardware options and creative problem solving.
